Fun holiday adventures in Green Rock

The holidays are here! Time to enjoy more time with friends and family, sip hot chocolate by the fireplace and spend some quality time catching up on your favorite shows. While the holidays are great for rest and relaxation, there are sometimes you just want to get out of the house for a while.

That’s why we’ve put together some of the best holiday activities to enjoy in the Hampton area. Our favorites combine the best sights and sounds of our area while getting you out and about.

See the holiday lights.

One of our favorite things to do each year is explore the festive holiday lights displays. Entertain small children with neighborhood walks to spot lights, or embark on short drives perusing the homes around where you live. If you want something a little bigger, check out this link to some of the best displays around New Hampshire planned for the season.

Go on a scavenger hunt.

An outdoor scavenger hunt could be just the thing to get the whole family to put down their phones and head outdoors into the crisp East coast air. You may think scavenger hunts are a spring or summertime activity, but going on a hunt in the winter months offers a different type of fun! Try a neighborhood scavenger hunt or any of the other fun ideas on this list. Wrap up the hunt with a steaming cup of hot chocolate and some warm cookies and you have the perfect afternoon for the entire family.

Find a letterbox.

Ready for more outdoor fun after your scavenger hunt? Time to find a letterbox! Similar to geocaching, small, weatherproof boxes are hidden in publicly accessible places (like parks). Clues are posted online on various websites. Unlike geocaching, you don’t need a handheld GPS to find these little treasures — just your imagination! Go to this link and search by city to find a list of boxes in your area and to print out a list of clues for each box. Once you’ve found a few boxes, try finding your own secret hiding place, creating a box of your own and creating a fun set of clues for other people to follow! For more information about letterboxing, check out this informative Q&A. Just think of it as a holiday scavenger hunt!

Explore our local museums.

Ready to head inside for a bit? No problem! Stroll through one of our great local museums. You can take a guided tour with a marine biologist and even touch ocean creatures at Explore the Ocean. Ready for more science? Head to the Seacoast Science Museum in Rye for even more hands-on fun, including touch tanks, interactive exhibits and nature programs. The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire is another great option, especially for small children. They have a ton of great events for children as young as 2! But no matter what are you are, you’ll find something new and exciting at these local spots.

Take a nature walk.

Enjoying our beautiful beaches isn’t just for summer. Go on a beach walk this winter and explore things a little differently. Head out to Hampton Beach and stroll to the famous pavilion. See a lot of sights and sounds of the season during just a stroll through your neighborhood. If you have small children and the weather cooperates, going to a playground can help them burn off some of that energy and help everyone sleep better. Plus, you’ll have fun, too!

Heading outside may be one of the last things that most people want to do this time of the year. But even moderate activity and a bit of sunlight can help release endorphins (those hormones that keep us happy) as well as help us feel better, more able to handle the stress of a busy holiday and sleep better, too. Getting outside a bit more is great for the mind and body, especially during the winter months.
